A newspaper reporter called me recently to discuss the reasons behind rising gas prices.  After I explained the various factors that are increasing your pain at the pump, the reporter asked me if high gas prices going into the November election would affect President Obama’s re-election chances.  My first impulse was to say, “Let’s hope so.”  But after many years of being quoted and misquoted in the press, I have learned to choose my words carefully.  Therefore, I responded that high gas prices just before the election represent a “worst-case scenario for President Obama.”

My quote was a statement of so obvious a political reality that I expected no pushback from it.   After all, rightly or wrongly, Americans do tend to blame the president—regardless of his political party—for their economic woes.  Blaming the president is just what Americans do.  In fact, I sometimes think that one of the main reasons we elect presidents is so we will have someone to blame when things go wrong (the buck stops here).  Consequently, I was surprised a few days later to open my local newspaper and read in the masthead editorial that I am a heel for blaming rising gas prices on President Obama.  The editor even implied that I am one of those conspiracy theorists who blame President Obama for everything from warts to tooth decay.

Readers of Patriot Update know that I am no supporter of Barack Obama’s economic and energy policies, but conspiracy theorist?  The only conspiracy I am part of is that “great right wing conspiracy” alluded to by then First Lady Hillary Clinton.   The editor who took issue with my quote attempted to make the point that President Obama should not be blamed for high gas prices.  His contention was that presidents have little, in any, influence on the price of gas.  In reality, my quote this editor took issue with did not say that Barack Obama is responsible for rising gas prices, just that his re-election is not helped by them.  But had the editor asked me, I would have told him that not only do a lot of Americans blame President Obama for high gas prices—I among them—they have every reason to.

There has not been a president since Jimmy Carter who can so fairly and accurately be blamed—at least in part—for the ever-increasing price of gas than Barack Obama.  Why?  The answer is simple: Because oil is a speculative commodity.  The cost of a barrel of oil is directly affected by speculation over future supply and demand.  This means that speculation over future supply and demand affects the cost of oil and, in turn, gasoline. Any action by the president that could be viewed as limiting future supplies of oil will tend to increase the price of oil.  This is economics 101.

Yes, the president needs to take a big part of the blame. Had we continued to drill in this country, we wouldn’t be at the mercy of oil coming from other countries.

nans, you have a lot of company, myself included! I have eschewed racism in any form for many of my 76 yrs, but after the last 4 yrs in particular, watching the anti white, anti American & outright racism coming from the liberal black community, it is hard to look @ them & the things we see go on day after day after day in the black ghettos in America feel & not feel revulsion towards the players who happen to be black. I am not comfortable with the racist feelings that have descended upon me during this era, but the fact is that it is their actions of overt racism that have pushed me in that direction. The Obamaliar, his obviously racist wife & the punk Eric Holder along with the bunch that are “czars” have caused race relations to be set back 60 yrs – – and they blame US???????

Since the 1980″s when energy was allowed into the commodities chain end utilities were “deregulated” the cost has been in in a never ending spiral upward despite the BS about it would allow the market place to operate and lower costs. Now the progressives have a new way of raping and pillaging the masses carbon tax and even air tax to be traded on the exchange like just another commodity. We the people need to shut this down but of course we wont as a whole this country i comprised mainly of leaches.

  • BulldogRedeemer

Of course President Obama, as well as President Clinton, are at least partially to blame for the reasons stated here. When President Clinton was pushed to open up ANWR (not in a beautiful pristene area, but in the coastal marshland plains), he refused and said it would take 10 to 15 years before it would take effect to lower gas prices. Well——————-!

probably because he and his crooked wife wanted to buy it first

  • afanaglenn

Obama said to his environmentalist friends before the election that he was going to make energy costs high, and this is one election promise he kept. Gas more than doubled in price since the election where I live. Just another promise to himself to bankrupt the country.

And then there is….From Tom Selkis’ (Latham Ford) Facebook……….
True story yesterday at the dealership…..

“I’ll try to make this as short and to the point as I can.
One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to lease a brand new Focus. As he was reviewing her credit app with her he noticed she was on social security disability. He said to her you don’t look like your disabled and unable to work. She said well I’m really not, I could work if I wanted to but I make more now than I did when I was working and got hurt (non-disabling injury).
She said the gov’t sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check, she gets $700.00 a month on an EBT card (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent. Oh yeah and 250 minutes free on her phone. That is just south of $3500.00 a month.
When she was working she was taking home about $330.00 per week. Do the math and then ask yourself why the should she go back to work. If you multiply that by millions of people you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country. Once the socialist have 51% of the population in that same scenario we are finished.
The question is when do we cross that threshold if we haven’t already, and there are not enough people working to pay enough taxes to support the non-working people? Riots?? Be prepared to protect your homes.
She didn’t lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal $ by 10.00/month. Glad to know she is so frugal with her hard earned money.”
He advertised to get people on the disabled list, creating a middle class with government payments, with our tax dollars, instead of good old fashioned work.

I’m afraid this is true, we now have more in the wagon than we have pulling the wagon. If America falls to the Communists these Obama fools wont be treated so well and like all Communists they will slaughter the people by the millions. Ocommie in the Oval Office is a great admirer of Chairman Mao.

It would be interesting to review what that same editor had to say about the cause of high gasoline prices back in the spring of 2008, when they rose above $4/gallon on President Bush’s watch. My guess is that he was not quite so certain that the President was not involved, back then.

As with most subjects, though, Progressives get this one exactly backwards. President Bush favored opening more of the continental shelf for oil exploration, but was thwarted by the activism of the Democrat-controlled Congress. Permitting more drilling would have pushed oil prices downward. Bush probably favored the weak dollar policy of the Fed, which contributed to the rise in crude oil prices, but aside from that, most of the Bush administration’s actions did not make gasoline more expensive.

By contrast, the Obama administration’s war on oil development is directly responsible for perceived restrictions in supply, which in turn pushes the price of oil higher. His mishandling of the Middle East makes violence there more likely, which pushes the price of oil higher. His overspending devalues the dollar further, which pushes the price of oil higher. Lots of things affect the price of crude oil, but everything Pres. Obama has been doing has been making the price higher than it could be.

  • adamenochnoah

My compliments to the mystery writer of this article for the excellent point he made.

  • Bill Senior

Of course the Highest Office in the World has a say in Oil Prices, PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!
If not directly, he could have ordered more drilling – instead of less, here in the United States and made the USA lesser dependant on Foreign Oil … they would be giving it to us by now! Hey, Obama isn’t going to cut off HIS Majesty’s (King Of Saudi Arabia – who he bowed down to) money supply from the USA … Get it People!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AND … The Arab Countries can’t feed the shit (Oil) to their Camels!!!!!!!!!

    • Poodleguy

Bill Sr, for proof of that, one needs only to look back @ Bush 43’s success in lowering gasoline prices just by announcing an increase in drilling. Prices dropped before another well was in process of being drilled. The obamaliar has wanted this along with a whole bunch of the commie/lib bastards that he placed within his regime!!!!! One more week & he will be on his way out, bet on it!!!!!

  • Bill Senior

The Answer is very very clear …………………… YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • metheoldsarge

Hey all you voters and apathetic non-voters. Do you remember what the average price was for a gallon of gas on Inauguration Day which was January 20, 2009? It was around $1.75 give or take a few cents. How is that “Hope and Change” working out for you? In actuality, the President and Congress have no direct control over the fuel prices. What they do have is control of their own actions and those can have an influence on how the prices will go. A prime example of that is back during the Bush years. I am sure you all remember when the price of gas went to $4.00 a gallon. President Bush signed an executive order that opened up permits for off-shore and land drilling. Gas prices dropped to $2.50 a gallon almost overnight. By the time he left office it was down to $1.75 to $1.84 a gallon. When President Obama took office he rescinded Bush’s permits and put a ban on oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. Then gas prices started to rise. Coincidence? You decide.

  • edward

Absolutely – gas went from $1.84 to 3.84 during his reign of terror. He stopped production of gas wells, he vetoed the pipeline from canada………….we were forced to buy foreign oil during his reign……………he wasted trilions on “green cars” and schemes

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=741520213 John Zellie

High gas prices are buckwheat fault, he has prevented the pipeline, he has prevented drilling in the golf, he has prevented drilling in Alaska, He has wasted billions on Failed solar energy crack pot ideas, that a two year old would laugh at.

He is a con, he is dangerous, he needs to be impeached, tried, sentenced and imprisoned at Gitmo with all the other muslim terrorists.

obama will do anything to win..
I am watching Obama act like he cares about people and playing this storm up…he is getting praises and it makes me puke..
How do we know this is not the October surprise.. Remember HARRP???? It can stimulate tsunamis , earthquakes and storms, hurricanes and such.look it up..we all know Obama would do anything, I mean anything, to stay as our dictator.. He does not care about anybody but himself…He may have created this to make him look great…I don’t trust him and will never ever praise him.

  • Tom Hill

Increasing gas prices because gas is a speculative commodity affected by supply and demand is only part of the answer. Influenced by the President? Absolutely! However,
he purposely set an agenda to raise the cost of fuel, and established
regulatory systems in motion to drive the U.S. Economy over the cliff.

I hold multiple advance degrees in Business, Finance, and Psychology, to include
    economics and marketing.

I work directly in the purchase and sale of petroleum products and can relate
directly to the price thereof. All crude oil is bought and sold in United
States currency, as are the majority of refined products, i.e. gas, diesel,
heating oil, etc. Nearly three years ago the Obama Administration purposely
leaked a proposition to monetize the debt knowing full well it would not only
alarm the Republicans and the general population (those who do something other
than watch soaps on TV) when they realized it would inflate the dollar and
drive our economy into the proverbial toilet, but would solicit an immediate
reaction from our number one creditor, China. They fixed the former with a
series of lies stating that they would never use monetization of the debt to
lessen the debt interest burden, and then they fixed the problem with China by
a series of trade and other agreements which were totally one sided in favor of
China. The conspirators were none other than Obama, Bernanke, and Geithner. They
then proceeded to monetize the debt.

    Bernanke’s role was to flood the global market with dollars which had zero backing;
Geithner’s role was to sell Treasury Bonds by the boat load. A bit player was
the Secretary of Energy whose role was to propagandize why prices for fuel were
being forced ever higher by OPEC and those evil oil companies. Obama’s primary
role was to appease the feelings of the OPEC members and point fingers at
everyone except himself and his co-conspirators, while simultaneously gutting
the U.S. Petroleum industry, i.e. eliminating refineries, refusing to issue new
refinery licenses, increasing regulatory limits on pollutant outputs, etc.

Speculation over oil and gas futures yes, but the real
reason for high gas prices is Obama’s overall agenda to destroy the U.S.
Economy. Monetizing the debt and destruction of the U.S. Petroleum Industry are
just two items on his checklist.

Yes, it is defintely obamas fault the gasoline is HIGH, Obama also told us OUR ELECTICITY WAS GOING TO BE THREE (3) times as high, that it was going to go skyhigh he said said as candidate before he was selected.
