Thomas Menino, a Democrat, has served as Boston’s mayor for thirty years, longer than any previous mayor. Even though he enjoys a high approval rating, he is also known for saying and doing some very controversial things.
In 2001, he stepped in to block a drugstore chain from opening up a new store several blocks from the pharmacy owned by one of his political supporters and close friends. In 2012 he announced he would block the opening of any new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Boston because of owner Dan Cathy’s statement against same-sex marriage. Even though their sports teams are bitter rivals, Menino joined forces with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to launch their Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign.
Most recently, Menino has opened his mouth and inserted his foot during an interview with the New York Times. The reporter asked Menino what city other than Boston could he live in. After a few moments to think about it, he said Detroit. The reporter than asked him what he would do in Detroit and Menino responded:
”I’d blow up the place and start all over.”
