The First Lady was talking to a CBS affiliate in Vermont about the difficulties facing parents who are trying to balance busy work and home lives.

She explained that she had been in a similar position to many other working parents before moving to the White House; “working, driving kids to practice, not having enough time to shop or cook, not having the energy”.

However, her mistake came when she urged “Believe me, as a busy single mother”.

Mrs Obama quickly corrected herself, saying “I shouldn’t say ‘single’ – as a busy mother …”, and adding: “You know, when you’ve got the husband who’s president, it can feel a little single, but he’s there.”
