New York Times columnist David Brooks argues that former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel has been nominated by the Obama administration for Secretary of Defense in order to carry out drastic cuts to America’s military spending and capability.

That’s funny, does anyone recall President Obama running for re-election on slashing defense (or grabbing guns, or raising taxes on the middle class, for that matter)?

David Brooks makes a reference to Spengler, who told European leaders that “they could either be global military powers or pay for their welfare states, but they couldn’t do both.” Brooks then mentions the estimated target for defense cuts — from 4.3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 3% of GDP by 2019.
