President Obama ripped Senate Republicans Wednesday for blocking a paycheck fairness bill, leveling charges against the GOP that will serve as the centerpiece of the Democratic 2014 campaign pitch.

The Paycheck Fairness Act, which was designed to combat wage disparity between men and women, failed to receive the 60 votes needed for passage in the upper chamber.

“Today, Senate Republicans overwhelmingly blocked the Paycheck Fairness Act – preventing it from even receiving an honest debate, let alone a simple yes-or-no vote,” Obama said in a statement.

“Republicans in Congress continue to oppose serious efforts to create jobs, grow the economy and level the playing field for working families,” the president added.
