Susan Rice was not lying but put a “softer touch” on the September 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) said Friday.

Chambliss spoke just ahead of a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing where Gen. David Petraeus is to testify on the attack that killed four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya.

“I’m not saying she lied, I’m just saying she didn’t tell [the truth],” Chambliss said on MSNBC. “She put a softer touch on what the real facts were. That’s not lying.”

Rice has been criticized by Republicans for describing the terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate as stemming from a peaceful protest. She made that argument nearly a week after the attack in several cable news appearances.
